Company Information
Hickory Chickory Cafe was a restaurant/coffee shop in Harahan which offered a tasty selection of food and specialty coffee drinks. New to the Harahan area, Hickory Chickory’s owners were looking to spread the word via a new website along with some print advertising. After meeting with the owners, I learned a lot about what they were looking for, even if they weren’t exactly sure what it was. Basically, they wanted a simple site, with an attractive look and some custom functionality, including a way to update their daily specials on the front page, and a way to change their hours if need be.
Challenges & Solutions
1. Creating a distinct look for a brand new business can sometimes be tricky. Yes, they had a logo, which was a good start for a color combination, but it wasn’t quite enough. For this project, I went on location with a pencil and sketchpad and wrote down the different inspirations I got from the inside of the shop, which consisted of very warm reds, yellows, and browns. To incorporate this into the site, I used a gradient background behind a coffee bean border, with a multicolored complimentary navigation bar.
2. The company’s owner needed a way to easily update the site daily or as needed. This had to be done with a low budget (without a complete content management system). To attain this goal, I created a submission system that lacked the wysiwyg frills of a CMS, but was just enough to get the job done on a low budget.
Overview and Conclusion
The owners of Hickory Chickory might not have been sure what to expect from the site, but they were happy with the end result of the design and the ease-of-use of the dynamic portions of the site. Due to excellent communication from both Hickory Chickory Cafe and WebNola, the site was launched five weeks before the originally proposed date.
