Company Information
Pho Orchid is a Vietnamese restaurant in Metairie, Louisiana. After opening in January of 2009, Pho Orchid has had many positive reviews on sites like Yelp and Urbanspoon.
Challenges & Solutions
One challenge we ran into during the Pho Orchid project was with the way the top of the site template was created. Basically, the three large cultural icons at the top were created – followed by the rest of the site – with the text under the icons as an afterthought. I totally forgot that the text under the icons would need mouseover states (AKA to look different when the mouse is over the icon) that would be applied whether the cursor was over the text or the image.
To achieve this effect without rebuilding the entire template, I decided to try the following: I took the cultural icon images and made them a bit taller in photoshop. After that, I added the text to the bottom of the newly higher image at the bottom, and I placed them back into the template. At this point, the text was floating by itself on top of the red background. I applied a position:relative in the CSS about 30 pixels from the top which knocked the cultural icons down thirty pixels. At this point, there was a 30 pixel gap at the top of the site… which can’t happen. The last piece of the puzzle was to apply another 30 pixel position:relative, only this time using the container div – from the bottom! This knocked the entire site up 30px and the site looked perfect.
Overview and Conclusion
In conclusion, this allowed the site to be finished a full day ahead of the deadline which subsequently allowed the site to go live early! Here’s what Dave of Pho Orchid had to say about WebNola: “It was a pleasure to have webnola do my website, everything was great!”.
